Celebrating Library and Information Services (LIS) Month and National Book Week

The LIC will again spearhead various activities for the 20th LIS Month and the 77th National Book Week on November 14-29, 2011. The theme for this year’s LIS month and National Book Week Celebration is “Aklatan para sa Kaunlaran.”

This year’s celebration will be highlighted with the following activities:
1. 1st UM Library Conference: A Meeting of Minds, A Festival of Papers on November 17,2011, 1-4 PM at Matina LIC, this intellectual discussion aims to develop increased capacities of students’ researches for knowledge generation relevant to the University, our country as well as the global community and provide an opportunity to bring forth some significant findings of the researches contributive to the enrichment of the University’s history and culture in response to the call of the time and to some extent probable societal solutions of the country’s problems. This is one way of acknowledging the importance of the students as a main client of the University and the LIC as well. This is a project of the Faculty Library Committee (FLIC) chaired by Prof. Saidamin Bagolong.

2. Quiz bee on November 22, 2011, 1 PM at the auditorium and will be sponsored by the BLIS Faculty and Students.

3. T-shirt Design Competition, contest period will be from November17-26, 2011. Deadline for submission of entries is until the closing hours of the LIC on November 26, 2011. The three winning entries are deemed the property of UM LIC and the design winning the first prize will be produced and used by the LIC staff.

4. Seminar on “Ethics in Research” on November 29, 2011, 9am, sponsored by the Student Library Committee (SLIC) chaired by Prof. Rico B. Maghuyop.

5. Trivia Challenge. Questions are to be asked during the launching and culmination on November 17 and 29, 2011 respectively.

6. Culmination Activities on November 29, 2011, 1PM at UM Matina LIC.
6.1 Book Parade – The objective of this parade is not only to promote the excitement and love of reading but to show the community our desire to share a healthy, scholastically nurturing and fun activity for the “dress up” celebration. It is a fun way to display to the academic community that our students find reading a much more worthwhile and enjoyable way to spend their time. This is a contest of showcasing your favorite books while enjoying and having fun and it is open to all grade and year level of the UM Basic Education Department and partner schools of UM namely: Matina Aplaya Elementary School, Matina Pangi Elementary School, GSIS Heights Elementary School, Sta. Ana National High School, Gov. Duterte National High School, and Maa National High School.
6.2 Poetry in Motion – Participants will be the students of the UM Basic Education Department and partner schools of UM namely: Matina Aplaya Elementary School, Matina Pangi Elementary School, GSIS Heights Elementary School, Sta. Ana National High School, Gov. Duterte National High School, and Maa National High School. Each participating school will be given a copy of the poem to be memorized and interpreted.
6.3 Awarding of the Top Library Client (TLC) of the Year. Annually the LIC is giving awards to deserving students, faculty and programs to recognize their support to the LIC’s vision, mission and goals and for giving importance to the library and its resources in the attainment of quality education and as a hallmark of academic excellence of the University of Mindanao. Likewise, “Friends of the Library Award” is being awarded to donors of good number of quality reading materials in recognition to their profound concern in developing library collections.
6.4 Awarding of Outstanding LIS alumna – This award is to recognize the outstanding performance of Library Science graduates of the University of Mindanao.
