President Torres Inducts Alumni Officers

DavaoCity –University ofMindanao President GUILLERMO P. TORRES, JR., recently inducted into office the newly elected officers of the UM Alumni Association, Incorporated (UMAAI) with a simple ceremony held at UM Board Room, Bolton Street, Davao City.

The UM alumni officers inducted with a two-year term (2011-2013) were the following: LEONARDO R. AVILA, III – President; WILFREDO D. ALONZO – VP for External Affairs; JOSE Q. ELISES – VP for Internal Affairs; MARIA JULIETA R. TORRES – Secretary; THELMA S. CIUDADANO – Treasurer;  and ROUEL M. BRAÑA – Auditor.  Directors at Large:  MARCELINO A. TUMAROY, JR.; PEDRITO CASTILLO and JONAS MASCARIÑAS.  Sectoral representatives: JONAS MASCARIÑAS – Accountancy; LEONARDO R. AVILA, III – Business Administration; FREDERICK J. ALONZO – Arts and Sciences; ISAGANI SABADO – Engineering and Architecture; WILFREDO D. ALONZO, SR. – Law; WALTER VALENCERINA – Education; ROUEL M. BRAÑA – High School and Elementary and BAI CORY ORK - TEE – Graduate School.

President Torres’ message to the UM Alumni Officers was emphasized on the need to strengthen the linkages betweenUniversityofMindanaoand the Alumni and as well as the establishment of cohesive harmony with the latter domestically and internationally.  He further challenged the newly inducted Officers through the leadership of Pres. Leonardo R. Avila, III to start the construction of the three-storey UMian Alumni Center using the 500 square meter lot allotted by the University for this purpose situated at the Matina Campus.

UMAAI Pres. Avila is aptly optimistic in erecting the P30-Million UMian Alumni Center through the active cooperation of the Officers and all UM Alumni stationed in the country and  the world.  He  estimated some 100,000 alumni around the world and further said  if thirty percent of these will be able to contribute P1,000.00 each, then the establishment of the Alumni Center will be a reality.  The said structure will serve as the hub for all activities of the Alumni Association which shall be provided with complete appurtenance like computers, website, telephone and the like.   The UMian Alumni Center will have a usufruct contract with the University of Mindanao for fifty (50) years after its construction.

During the 1st regular board meeting of the UMAAI Board of Directors, President Avila stressed that the main mission and objective of the Association is focused on the following: identifying ways on how to raise funds needed for the erection of the Alumni edifice and the Annual General Assembly & Homecoming of the UM Alumni Association celebrated during the week-long Founding Anniversary of the University of Mindanao.
