UM`S Dr. Lawagon Joins Global Thought Leaders at Prototypes for Humanity Professors` Programme in Dubai
The University of Mindanao takes pride in the international engagement of Dr. Chosel Lawagon, on her participation in the Professors` Programme of Prototype for Humanity in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, from November 17 to 20, 2025. This global academic initiative convenes leading professors, researchers, and innovation experts to share high-impact research aligned with pressing global challenges.
The Professors` Programme serves as a collaborative platform that promotes cross-disciplinary research, global academic cooperation, and the translation of university-based studies into concrete solutions for societal and environmental issues. The programme gathers experts working on themes such as wellbeing and health futures, sustainable and resilient infrastructure, artificial intelligence and augmented intelligence, environmental sustainability and climate action, socio-economic empowerment and innovation, and open and speculative categories. Representing UM and the Philippines on this prestigious stage, Dr. Lawagon will deliver her presentation on November 19, 2025, showcasing her research titled "Simultaneous Selective Recovery of Lithium and Cobalt from Spent Lithium-Ion Batteries Using Modified Bipolar Membrane." Her work directly addresses challenges in e-waste management, sustainable resource recovery, and circular economy models, positioning it at the center of SDG priorities—particularly SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), SDG 13 (Climate Action), and SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure).
Through her participation, Dr. Lawagon highlights the global relevance of UM’s research capabilities. Her study on recovering critical battery metals—lithium and cobalt—offers solutions amid the rising demand for clean energy technologies and the urgent need for responsible recycling systems. The innovative use of modified bipolar membrane electrodialysis presents a greener, more efficient method of extracting valuable materials, reducing environmental harm while promoting sustainable industrial practices.
Beyond showcasing the strength of UM’s research portfolio, Dr. Lawagon’s engagement offers strategic advantages for the University of Mindanao. It reinforces UM’s reputation as an emerging leader in sustainability-driven research and strengthens its international academic collaborations. Her presence in Dubai creates opportunities for partnerships, joint publications, and research initiatives with foreign universities and institutions, furthering UM’s vision of global competitiveness and community-responsive scholarship.
As UM continues to elevate its global standing, Dr. Chosel Lawagon’s representation at the Prototypes for Humanity Professors’ Programme serves as a testament to the university’s commitment to producing research that not only advances knowledge but also creates meaningful impact across nations.
