CHSE UMAGAPAY Brings Health Awareness and Medical Care to Indigenous Community



           Last November 28, 2025, a total of 130 Bagobo-Tagabawa beneficiaries underwent discussions on key medical concerns in the community courtesy of the ๐‚๐‡๐’๐„ ๐”๐Œ๐€๐†๐€๐๐€๐˜: ๐๐š๐ง๐ ๐ก๐ข๐ฆ๐š๐ง๐ ๐ง๐จ ๐ฌ๐š ๐๐š๐ง๐ฅ๐š๐ฐ๐š๐ฌ โ€“ ๐€๐ฐ๐š๐ซ๐ž๐ง๐ž๐ฌ๐ฌ ๐š๐ง๐ ๐“๐ซ๐ž๐š๐ญ๐ฆ๐ž๐ง๐ญ ๐จ๐ง ๐‚๐จ๐ฆ๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ง๐ข๐œ๐š๐›๐ฅ๐ž ๐š๐ง๐ ๐๐จ๐ง-๐‚๐จ๐ฆ๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ง๐ข๐œ๐š๐›๐ฅ๐ž ๐ƒ๐ข๐ฌ๐ž๐š๐ฌ๐ž๐ฌ, in Catigan, Toril, Davao City.

Initiated by the UM College of Health Sciences Education with the support of the Community Extension Center, the initiative brought together health education and accessible medical services in one community-based initiative. A total of ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ ๐Ÿ๐š๐œ๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ญ๐ฒ ๐ฆ๐ž๐ฆ๐›๐ž๐ซ๐ฌ and ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ– ๐‚๐‡๐’๐„ ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ฎ๐๐ž๐ง๐ญ๐ฌ took part in the extension activity.  The initiative was further supported by ๐Ÿ’ ๐‚๐‡๐’๐„ ๐š๐ฅ๐ฎ๐ฆ๐ง๐ข, demonstrating the collective effort of the college in extending healthcare beyond the university.  The figures reflected the strong support behind the activity.

            The morning program centered on health education with interactive discussions on four key areas: prevention of communicable diseases, understanding non-communicable diseases, safe and effective medication use, and pain management. An open forum allowed the participants to raise questions and discuss health concerns relevant to their community. 

In the afternoon, the medical mission provided the beneficiaries with direct access to healthcare services. ๐ƒ๐ซ. ๐‘๐จ๐ง ๐‚๐ก๐ซ๐ข๐ฌ๐ญ๐ข๐š๐ง ๐‚๐ž๐ฅ๐ข๐ณ, ๐Œ๐ƒ, and ๐ƒ๐ซ. ๐‘๐š๐ง๐ฃ๐ข๐œ ๐๐š๐ฅ๐ข๐ž๐ฏ๐š, ๐Œ๐ƒ, conducted physician consultations, while Nursing students and faculty members performed vital signs assessment. Meanwhile, the Medical Technology students and faculty members conducted blood sugar testing, and Pharmacy students and faculty members assisted in the dispensing of prescribed medications. Through these services, the 130 beneficiaries were given opportunities for health assessment, consultation, diagnostic screening, and medication support. 

The initiative supports ๐’๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ญ๐š๐ข๐ง๐š๐›๐ฅ๐ž ๐ƒ๐ž๐ฏ๐ž๐ฅ๐จ๐ฉ๐ฆ๐ž๐ง๐ญ ๐†๐จ๐š๐ฅ ๐Ÿ‘: ๐†๐จ๐จ๐ ๐‡๐ž๐š๐ฅ๐ญ๐ก ๐š๐ง๐ ๐–๐ž๐ฅ๐ฅ-๐๐ž๐ข๐ง๐ , SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities and SDG 17: Partnership for the Goals - reflecting CHSEโ€™s commitment to promoting health awareness and improving access to essential healthcare services, particularly among indigenous communities through collaboration with key stakeholders. This approach is consistent with the University of Mindanaoโ€™s broader commitment to inclusive and participatory community extension.

Together, these numbers tell the story of a community extension built on service, collaboration, and the shared goal of bringing healthcare closer to those who need it.
