Tech dreams for a better tomorrow as ‘Lumloman sa Bayan’ launches August 9

Advances in technology should not only mean faster processors and better video and camera quality, but should also consider how it can improve different aspects of society. This was the call to challenge of organizers to participants in the three-day tech ‘bootcamp’ Lumloman sa Bayan, a Kadayawan Innovation Camp activity with the University of Mindanao that will seek fresh, innovative ideas on how technology can aid society in these key areas: Agriculture, Tourism, Transportation, Environmental Sustainability and Disaster Risk Reduction. Opening on Aug. 9 at UM Auditorium in Matina campus, participants will meet with mentors who can guide them in designing their tech startup plans around the theme “Hatching the future of tech startups,” and how these plans can be aligned with their chosen sector to aid. According to UM’s Research and Publication Office (UM-RPC), who is handling the event along with other schools and private technology development companies, the bootcamp will focus on topics that are in line with Blockchain, Artificial Intelligence, Big Data, Analytics, Robotics, Internet-of-Things, and Cloud Computing; and its applications in the fields of Agriculture, Tourism, Transportation, Environmental Sustainability and Disaster Risk Reduction. “This is a startup event that will give chance to the potential tech entrepreneurs of the Davao Region to ideate, create and innovate solutions to social problems of the city of Davao,” said UM-RPC in a statement. Ma. Linda Arquiza, Vice President for UM-RPC, will lead the opening of the first day. Participants include 20 teams of varying occupations: students, developers, entrepreneurs, and innovators who submitted their pitches earlier last month. After the seminar and introductions with mentors at UM Auditorium, participants will proceed to Kadena Hub in Araullo street on August 10 – 11 to begin the development stage of their ideas with the following mentors: Jan Koichi Dayanan - Chapter Head, DevCon Davao Chapter; Bermil Espina – Chief Technical Officer, Traxion Tech Inc.; Franch Maverick Lorilla - TBI Manager, AGILab; April Cuenca - IHM Project Head, Tripkada Founder; Marx Consuegra - Chapter Lead, DGDC, UI/UX Designer; Eric Clark Su - Founder, ExNetwork Services, and Mark Dave Manansala – Chief Technical Officer, VXCHANGE.
