UM Debate Society (UMDS) members bag Best Speaker awards at Indonesia's Asian English Olympics

UMDS team members, Ma. Veronica Silayan (IV- Legal management) and Ian Angelo Sarto (II- Political Science) bagged three awards at the debate competition of the Asian English Olympics after five elimination rounds at BINUS University in Jakarta, Indonesia.
Silayan was awarded the top spot in the Novice Best Speaker awards. Sarto and Silayan also received awards as the 6th and 9th Best Speakers in the Open Category of the debate competition. Their coach, Candice Lleses, was also awarded as a breaking adjudicator and semi-final adjudicator.
The Asian English Olympics is an annual competition held by Bina Nusantara English Club. In 2024, the AEO attracted hundreds of delegates from Indonesia, Philippines, South Korea, and China to compete in 8 fields: Speech, Debate, Radio Drama, Short Story Writing, Newscasting, Storytelling, Spelling Bee, and Scrabble.
