Renewing Commitment and Collaboration: UM and DOT Region XI Strengthen Tourism Partnership

The University of Mindanao (UM) and the Department of Tourism (DOT) Region XI reaffirmed their shared commitment to advancing research, innovation, and sustainable tourism development through the formal signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). The ceremonial signing marked the renewal of a strategic partnership aimed at strengthening academe–government collaboration in the Davao Region.

Held at the University of Mindanao, the event underscored the continuing alignment between higher education and public service institutions in addressing the evolving needs of the tourism and hospitality industry. The renewed agreement reinforces joint initiatives in research, extension services, capacity building, and knowledge exchange—key pillars in developing future-ready professionals and evidence-based tourism policies.

Present during the signing were Dr. Joel B. Tan, Assistant Vice President for the Research and Innovation Center; Dr. Ma. Linda B. Arquiza, Vice President for the Research and Innovation Center; Director Tanya Rabat-Tan, Regional Director of DOT Region XI; Ms. Judy Colajio, Assistant Regional Director of DOT Region XI; and Dr. Dindo D. Silud, Dean of the College of Hospitality Education. Their presence highlighted the institutional commitment on both sides to translate collaboration into tangible outcomes for the region.

Central to the partnership is the role of the College of Hospitality Education, which continues to serve as a hub for tourism-related research, innovation, and human capital development. Through the MOU, UM and DOT Region XI are expected to co-develop research projects, training programs, and community-based initiatives that promote inclusive growth and sustainable tourism practices.

The renewed collaboration also supports national and global development goals by integrating quality education, decent work, industry innovation, and partnerships into tourism development strategies. By bridging academic expertise and government leadership, the partnership aims to generate data-driven insights and practical solutions that respond to the challenges and opportunities facing the regional tourism sector.

As UM and DOT Region XI move forward under this renewed agreement, the partnership stands as a testament to the value of sustained cooperation between academe and government—one that not only advances institutional mandates but also contributes meaningfully to regional development and the long-term vitality of the tourism and hospitality industry.
