The University of Mindanao Research and Innovation Center (UM-RIC) continues to expand its network of community and industry partners through an exploratory meeting with the Jewelry Training Facility of the Local Government of Monkayo, opening discussions on potential collaborations in innovation, skills development, and sustainable livelihood initiatives.
The engagement brought together representatives from UM-RIC and the Municipality of Monkayo to identify opportunities for cooperation that could strengthen the local jewelry industry while promoting inclusive economic growth and community empowerment.
During the meeting, both parties discussed prospective areas of collaboration focused on enhancing local craftsmanship through research-driven interventions, technology transfer, capacity-building programs, and innovation initiatives. The discussions also highlighted the importance of preserving and elevating local talents while creating opportunities for sustainable enterprise development within the municipality.
The Jewelry Training Facility serves as a key platform for developing the skills of local artisans and aspiring jewelry makers in Monkayo, a municipality known for its rich mining heritage and potential in jewelry production. Through strategic partnerships with academic and research institutions, the facility seeks to further improve the competitiveness and market readiness of locally crafted products.
For UM-RIC, the exploratory meeting reflects its commitment to extending the University's expertise beyond the academic setting by supporting local industries and communities through research, innovation, and extension services. By fostering partnerships with local government units and community-based organizations, the Center aims to develop sustainable solutions that generate economic opportunities while preserving cultural and artisanal traditions.
The initiative also aligns with broader development goals that promote innovation-driven entrepreneurship, decent work, and inclusive economic growth. Through collaborative efforts, UM-RIC envisions creating pathways for technology-enabled livelihood programs, product development, market expansion, and skills enhancement that can benefit local artisans and their communities.
As discussions progress, both institutions expressed optimism about future collaborations that will harness research and innovation to strengthen local industries, empower communities, and contribute to sustainable development in Monkayo and neighboring areas.
