Advancing Science, Inspiring Minds: Dr. Onggo Equips CHSE Students on Host-Pathogen Interaction and Immune Defense Mechanisms

Future healthcare professionals gained valuable insights into the fascinating world of infectious diseases and immunology as Dr. Lowela S. Onggo delivered a compelling lecture on host-pathogen interaction and immune defense mechanisms to students of the College of Health Sciences and Education (CHSE) on June 4, 2026, at AVR 4, New Learning and Innovation Center (LIC), University of Mindanao Matina Campus.

The lecture served as an avenue for students to deepen their understanding of how pathogens invade the human body and how the immune system responds to protect against infections. Through a comprehensive discussion, Dr. Onggo explained the complex interplay between disease-causing microorganisms and host defense systems, highlighting the latest scientific developments and research breakthroughs in immunology and infectious disease studies.

As a Medium-Term Balik Scientist under the Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Council for Health Research and Development, Dr. Onggo brought with her a wealth of international expertise and research experience. Her presentation emphasized the critical role of scientific research in addressing emerging health challenges and advancing healthcare innovations in the country.

Students actively participated in the discussion, engaging in thought-provoking exchanges on topics ranging from pathogen adaptation strategies to the body's innate and adaptive immune responses. The session provided learners with a clearer appreciation of how scientific discoveries contribute to disease prevention, diagnosis, and treatment—knowledge that is increasingly important in today's rapidly evolving healthcare landscape.

Beyond the scientific concepts discussed, Dr. Onggo also shared insights from her professional journey as a researcher, inspiring students to pursue careers in science, research, and innovation. Her engagement underscored the importance of nurturing a culture of scientific curiosity and evidence-based inquiry among future healthcare practitioners and researchers.

The activity reflects the University of Mindanao's continuing commitment to providing transformative learning experiences by connecting students with distinguished experts and scientists. Through initiatives such as this, the institution strengthens its mission of producing globally competent graduates equipped to contribute to the advancement of health sciences and the broader scientific community.

By bridging cutting-edge research with classroom learning, Dr. Onggo's lecture not only expanded students' scientific knowledge but also ignited a deeper appreciation for the role of science in improving lives—demonstrating how advancing scientific understanding can inspire the next generation of innovators, researchers, and healthcare leaders.
