University of Mindanao Young Researchers Secure Pioneer DOST-NRCP YSIP Research Grant

The University of Mindanao (UM) has achieved another milestone in research excellence as its young scientists earned recognition among the first-ever grantees of the Department of Science and Technology–National Research Council of the Philippines (DOST-NRCP) Young Scientists Incentive Program (YSIP) Research Grant. The distinction places UM among only 21 partner institutions nationwide whose researchers successfully secured funding under the inaugural implementation of the program, which awarded grants to just 64 research projects across the country.

Designed to cultivate the next generation of Filipino scientists, the YSIP provides research funding and mentorship to promising early-career researchers pursuing innovative and high-impact studies aligned with the country's national research agenda. Representing the University under Cluster II – Physical Sciences, Division VIII (Engineering and Industrial Research) are mentor Dr. Khino Parohinog and mentees Gershon M. Antoliao, Clarence I. Penaso, and Warren G. Esplana. Their funded project, Development of a Molecularly Imprinted Polymer (MIP)-based Paper Test Strip for the Colorimetric Detection of Bromide in Groundwater, seeks to develop an affordable and accessible technology for monitoring groundwater quality, addressing critical environmental and public health concerns.

The recognition reflects the University's growing research capability and its commitment to fostering a culture of scientific innovation through strong mentorship and collaborative research. By combining the expertise of seasoned researchers with the creativity of emerging scientists, the project demonstrates how research can translate into practical solutions that benefit communities while advancing the country's science and technology landscape.

The University of Mindanao extends its heartfelt congratulations to the research team for this remarkable accomplishment. As one of the pioneering recipients of the YSIP Research Grant, the team's success not only elevates the University's standing in the national research community but also reinforces UM's commitment to developing future scientific leaders whose work contributes to sustainable development and meaningful societal impact. The entire UM community celebrates this achievement and eagerly anticipates the innovations that will emerge from their research journey.
